Steve Stern Vs. Aamir Sultan: NYS Assembly District 10
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Incumbent Democratic State Assemblyman Steve Stern is seeking re-election to New York State Assembly District 10. He is being opposed by Republican challenger Aamir Sultan.Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5.This race is a rematch of 2022 when Stern defeated Sultan 25,879 votes to 21,843 votes.The 10th district covers Huntington, South Huntington, Huntington Station, Huntington Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, Dix Hills, West Hills, Melville, and part of East Farmingdale.Stern answered a Patch questionnaire prior to the election. Sultan has not yet responded to the questionnaire.Stern called the times "challenging" and said he is seeking re-election to "build on a record of accomplishment in delivering real results." He has served six terms in the Suffolk County Legislature and three terms in the New York State Assembly, citing his "proven track record of accomplishment."Stern called his top priority keeping families and neighborhoods safe from crime."I strongly opposed bail reform, authored legislation to provide judges with the power to detain dangerous criminals in jail and led the successful fight to add back numerous crimes that are again bail eligible," Stern said.Stern said he supports going after drug dealers who supply these deadly drugs and giving district attorneys the ability to "crack down on criminals with a new 'Death by Dealer' statute."Stern said the key issues for his 2024 campaign are protecting residents' tax dollars, waterways and the safety of suburban streets and quality of life.Stern said he voted to codify Roe v. Wade into New York State law and "safeguard the right to access abortion services."He said he has also worked to secure funding for local law enforcement to fight crime, prosecute violent gangs, crack down on the fentanyl epidemic and keep streets safe.Stern said New York has passed bills cracking down on toxic PFAs, or "forever chemicals" linked to causing cancer in humans. He said a series of bills are pending that would ban toxic chemicals in certain household and personal care items.Stern said Long Island's environment is facing "unprecedented threats." He said he has worked to provide funding for local clean water infrastructure, including $22 million for sewers in Huntington Station. He has also worked to ensure the safety of drinking water in schools and supported new regulations to reduce the presence of the toxic chemical 1,4-dioxane to protect the island's sole-source aquifer.To address the immigration crisis, Stern said the U.S. Congress should pass the "bipartisan legislative proposal that would increase the number of border police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel, and officers and judges to process claims of legal asylum." The state assemblyman said the bill would "both stem the tide of illegal border crossings and greatly reduce the backlog of asylum claims."Stern said he "strongly supports" eliminating the "unfair and inequitable $10,000 cap on SALT."The article Steve Stern Vs.
