Clear Skies in Columbus and Cincinnati Today Before Forecast Shift, Rain and Cooler Temps on the Horizon

The Midwestern skies above Columbus and Cincinnati are poised to remain clear, at least today. According to the latest update from the National Weather Service, high pressure to the northeast is beginning to wane. Still, the remnants will ensure that there will be very little cloud coverage on Monday and no significant chance of precipitation. The high temperatures will hover around the mid to upper 80s, a familiar warmth for this time of year, though not quite at the peaks recently witnessed.
However, things are set to notably, albeit slightly, chill in the coming days as low pressure from the Carolina coast begins its northwest journey towards the central Appalachians. NWS forecasts that this will result in increased cloud coverage and chances of rain, specifically targeting a trajectory from northeast Kentucky to central Ohio from Tuesday to Thursday. The advent of the clouds means that the mercury isn't set to climb relatively so high, with expected highs dropping from the weekend scorcher to more tepid regions, near the 80s east to lower 80s west, according to the National Weather Service.
However, the serenity of the skies is on borrowed time as the week proceeds. A tropical cyclone trace from the Carolinas will introduce volatile patterns Wednesday through Thursday. “System will be fighting a dry airmass in place that may diminish coverage and intensity of the precipitation,” detailed the long-term forecast report by NWS. Nevertheless, contingencies have not been discarded, with the possibility of showers and a few thunderstorms still in the mix, primarily affecting the eastern regions of the forecast area.
Looking further ahead, high pressure is expected to retake the reins, ushering in dryer and clearer conditions heading into the weekend. Temperatures are projected to recover to balmy conditions with highs in the mid and upper 80s by the week’s end as sunshine takes a firm hold behind the retreating remnants of the tropical interruption. For frequent flyers, there’s additional good news as the Aviation outlook from NWS suggests VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions should persist through much of this period, sparing travelers potential delays or cancellations due to the weather. “Expect only a few fair weather cumulus clouds today with thin high-level clouds streaming in from the east late in the day,” according to the NWS aviation section.
