Treyarch’s Call of Duty: World at War Zombies Mode Would Have Featured Some Very Boring Animations Were it Not for 1 Lucky Happenstance
Call of Duty continues to be one of the most successful gaming franchises year to year. Despite Modern Warfare III’s not-so-great reception from fans and critics, the upcoming Black Ops 6 is still an exciting release for later this year.
With Treyarch returning as lead developer, let’s look back at the first game to put them on the map as community favorites: World at War. Fans still enjoyed going back to 2007’s Modern Warfare but that game brought in a different feel for the multiplayer. In addition, the well-known co-op mode, Zombies, quickly became a staple for the franchise.
The Beginnings of Call of Duty’s Nazi Zombies
The mode was originally called “Zombie Nazis.”
In a blog post, the creator of Zombies mode, Jesse Snyder, described the development as he and the team worked on World at War. From the original name called Zombie Nazis to crunch development on weekends, it wasn’t simple to get this new mode off the ground.
Snyder’s favorite part of the “Nazi Zombie” saga as he calls it is when they did the mo-cap sessions one day.
“One of the actors we had for the day actually plays a zombie at Universal CityWalk. So, here we are, working on this total side project, and as luck would have it we have one of the best actors possible for zombie animations. As a result, our prototype just got a million times better.”
If this session didn’t happen, the Nazi Zombies mode would not have the same animations we see today. Inspired from the tower defense genre, Snyder wanted to create a mode where players would feel over run and unable to win.

He notes one common trait these games have is the feeling of being invincible and Nazi Zombies takes that away. With this level of strategy and challenge, it’s no surprise how the co-op took off from here.
What Made Treyarch’s Game So Special?
Entering a new era for the franchise.
Aside from Nazi Zombies becoming a staple mode for the series, World at War was the first time the community saw the back-and-forth between Infinity Ward and Treyarch. One year after the year, these two development studios would swap between games. This yearly pattern would stop once Sledgehammer Games developed Advanced Warfare in 2014.

Now, it’s a trio of developers swapping in and out. The upcoming Black Ops title is the return of Treyarch since the Cold War in 2020, considered Black Ops 5. The Black Ops series is praised very highly among the community, especially the first and second games.
Fans might never see World at War 2 but the Black Ops franchise still reigns supreme and Treyarch’s bread and butter at the end of the day. Look forward to its next game later this year because fans are really excited for this one. What do you think of the origins of Zombies mode? Let us know in the comments below!
