However, the creator of So Help Me Todd said that it was too late to try and fix it.
The finale was written and filmed before CBS found out the show was canceled.
The cliffhanger included Merritt Folding, the founding partner of the show’s central law firm who had never been seen before, showing up.
And Merritt showed up just as Todd (Skylar Astin) found out that Margaret Wright (Marcia Gay Harden)’s promotion was part of Merritt’s plot to frame her for his illegal activities.
The ending of every season has someone who would complicate things showing up.
However, this time, fans aren’t going to see how this plays out.
And they will never get a full look at Merritt, as only his feet were shown.
Fans were angry about the cliffhanger, but the creator of So Help Me Todd explained the reasoning behind it.
TOO LATE
So Help Me Todd’s creator Scott Prendergast told Deadline that they had pitched the cliffhanger at the beginning of the season.
Because the executives thought they would be back for a Season 3, they told them to go ahead with it.
“We wanted to do sort of an Empire Strikes Back-y end with a dangerous note,” he said.
“By the time we knew that we were canceled, it was too late,” Scott explained.
“It’d been a month since we shot that episode. We found out on April 19. We wrapped production at the end of March.”
However, Scott offered some relief for fans as he told the outlet that they are trying to shop So Help Me Todd to a different network.

He said that they haven’t had any takers as of yet, but they are still talking.
Scott then said that “Merritt’s feet” were actually his, and he also voiced the character.
‘PERFECTLY TODD’
When the series finale on May 16, Skylar, 36, tweeted his feelings about it.
“What kills me the most is I know how the series was really supposed to end. It was perfect. Emotional, full circle, and perfectly Todd,” he wrote.
Under his tweet, fans begged him to give them a proper ending, even though it is not up to him.
“We want a proper ending,” one fan begged.
“We’re all gutted that #SoHelpMeTodd has been cancelled. Not only because it ended on that cliffhanger but it’s so unique and fun and joyous as well as interesting. So disappointing,” commented another.
“Still hope someone picks up the show ! It’s terrible when we don’t feel like we got closure ! That’s Zoey’s Playlist all over again. I’m very sad that I won’t see more of Alison’s character development,” a fan replied.
Skylar also starred on Zoey’s Playlist.
“It was such a good show!! Still bummed! Hoping somebody will pick up this show and give it a proper ending with more seasons!” said one last fan.
