REDONDO BEACH, CA — Several South Bay police departments will be hosting a free educational event next week aimed at fostering community relationships and promoting safety. The event, known as National Night Out, is an annual campaign by law enforcement agencies across the country that brings communities together to take a stand against crime, drugs and disorder in their neighborhoods. This year, most departments will host the event on Tuesday, Aug. 5. The first National Night Out was held in the United States during the summer of 1984. Over 2 million community members across 23 states took part in the event. Today, millions more take part, with some departments choosing to host block parties, cookouts and parades as part of their events.Here are the South Bay cities that will take part in National Night Out this year: GardenaThe Gardena Police Department will be hosting a summer block party and backpack giveaway on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at City Hall from 6 to 8 p.m. "Come enjoy delicious food, awesome raffles, family-friendly games, giveaways, and plenty more," the department said on social media. "It’s a great chance to meet your neighbors and connect with the Gardena Police Department in a fun, relaxed setting." El SegundoThe El Segundo Police Department will be hosting its National Night Out event from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, in the 300 block of Main Street. It will feature live music, food, an inflatable jumper, a K9 demonstration and more, the department said on social media in June. The first 200 kids at the event will receive a superhero cape. "The one and only Warrior Princess will be suiting up to show off her incredible K9 skills," the department said on social media. "After the action, stick around for some FREE family fun, food and festivities." Redondo BeachThe Redondo Beach Police Department will be hosting its National Night Out event from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. The event will feature police demonstrations, games, food trucks, fire trucks and more, the department said in a Facebook Post on July 23. "Connect with your neighbors and local police officers," the department said in the post. "National Night Out is a way to connect and build relationships between first-responders and the community."TorranceThe Torrance Police Department will be hosting six block party locations from 6 to 8 p.m. during National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 5. These are the locations: 3800 block of 172nd StreetVictor Park at 4727 Emerald St. 18800 block of Cranbrook Avenue1519 Post Ave. Sea-Aire Golf Course at 22730 Lupine Dr. Hickory Park at 2850 232nd St. It's unclear what each block party will have in store, but the police department said it's an opportunity for Homeowner Associations, Neighborhood Watch Captains and community members to gather and strengthen ties with TPD and city officials.
