Convicted Trump to Attend San Francisco Fundraiser Amid "Trump Chicken" Protest and Solidarity Rally
As Former President Donald Trump is set to appear in San Francisco this Thursday for a high-ticket fundraiser, a towering inflatable bird donning Trump's distinctive hairstyle and prison garb will also make its presence known. According to CBS News San Francisco, the 33-foot "Trump Chicken" is planned to roost in the city during the fundraiser, a symbol that has bobbed its head in the Bay Area's political scene since its first appearance in 2017.
The event, expected to attract Silicon Valley elites and take place despite the blue-leaning proclivities of the San Francisco electorate, is scheduled just under a week after Trump was convicted on multiple charges in a New York "hush money" trial. Yet, despite the verdict, the Trump campaign appears to confidently move forward, with some observers believing the timing could be advantageous. "The more that he can sell to his supporters that he's a victim, he thinks he's going to do better electorally," Nolan Higdon, a professor of History and Communication, told KGO-TV.
Trump's last presidential bid only garnered him nine percent of San Francisco's votes, and yet, with ticket prices for the upcoming event ranging between $50,000 to $500,000, the campaign is angling to draw in a substantial sum. The fundraiser is co-hosted by notable Trump supporters in the area, including tech billionaire David Sacks and venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, as the invitation obtained by Puck News revealed.
Simultaneously, a group of Trump supporters organize a welcome rally at Marina Green, aspiring to show solidarity with the former President during his Bay Area stop. "This is a rally, just a group of us, men and women, citizens, we the people, wanted to greet Trump, Donald Trump, coming to San Francisco and let him know our love is there, our support is there," Mindy Pechenuk, a candidate for Oakland City Council, told KGO-TV. Meanwhile, residents hope the visit maintains the neighborhood's decorum. "Hoping for respect, hoping for keeping decorum and that sort of thing and maintaining the integrity of this beautiful space," Logan Chadwick, a Lower Pacific Heights resident, said to KGO-TV.
While the "Trump Chicken" and its convoy will sail across the Bay, there's no word yet on larger demonstrations expected during the fundraiser. This visual protest has been recurring over the years, its last inflection being under President Biden's newly elected term in 2021. Organizer Danelle Morton opined on the spectacle's significance to CBS News San Francisco, saying, "I think the point of sailing the chicken has to be made, right?"
