Lightning Strike Ignites Home In Monroe: Fire Officials
MONROE, CT — Firefighters tackled a residential blaze on Williamsburg Drive Wednesday night that investigators determined was caused by a lightning strike. The Monroe Volunteer Fire Department got the call shortly before midnight, and dispatched three dozen firefighters in six engines and a ladder truck at the height of a heavy thunderstorm.First responders found that the family, including young children, had safely evacuated prior to their arrival. There were no injuries. The firefighters were able to swiftly contain the blaze in the area of the basement where it originated, according to fire officials.Due to smoke and fire damage to basement mechanicals, the residents could not return to the home for the evening and stayed with family. Investigators determined that lightning struck a tree in the backyard and followed a path into the home, sparking a fire in the basement, fire officials said on social media. Working smoke alarms, a quick evacuation and notification to 911, and closing the doors near the fire area all helped to mitigate the damage, according to their report. In addition to the MVFD firefighters, emergency personnel from Stevenson, Stepney and White Hills fire companies; Monroe police; the Fire Marshals Office, and EMS were on scene to assist. All units cleared the scene by 1:30 a.m., fire officials said. The article Lightning Strike Ignites Home In Monroe: Fire Officials appeared first on Monroe, CT Patch.
