‘Noles still pushing hard for Alabama commit; Johnson plans FSU official visit
There was a time not too long ago when Florida State was believed to be the clear favorite for four-star Georgia defensive back Darrell Johnson. Then Alabama swooped in and landed his commitment in March.
While Johnson is still committed to the Crimson Tide, Florida State clearly isn’t giving up. And Johnson told Warchant this week at the On3 Elite Series in Nashville that he still has a close relationship with head coach Mike Norvell, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain.
“Me and Coach Norvell have a great bond,” Johnson said. “Me and Coach Fuller, Coach Surtain, I love their loyalty and their vibe they give off. Just great coaches.”
Johnson, who is the nation’s No. 2 “athlete,” according to the On3 Industry Ranking, and a top-50 prospect overall, originally was scheduled to take an official visit to Florida State on June 7. But he said that trip now will take place during the 2024 season; it will be the second-to-last official visits he takes.
Johnson said that Tennessee, UCF and Auburn are also still in contention despite his commitment to the Tide. And he told Warchant that Florida State sits at No. 2 among his favorites.
“The coaching staff, its loyalty,” Johnson said, when asked about his interest in Florida State. “We talk about more than football, about life in general. Like what I want to do outside of football. So it’s a good vibe, bond with them.”
The Dodge County star also clearly likes Norvell’s high-energy approach.
“When he sees me, he yells my name so loud everyone hears,” Johnson said. “And he just has different energy than any other coaches. He’s always happy, energetic, and I love that.”
When asked about his interest in Alabama, Johnson said it was his dream school growing up. And he was impressed by the spring practice he watched earlier this year.
When it comes to making a final decision, he said it will be about who can best develop him at the next level.
So what is he looking for during his official visit to Florida State?
“Really with Tallahassee (and the FSU staff), they’ve already been with my mom, been to my basketball games,” he said. “So just seeing different pieces of Tallahassee — see what they do and don’t do.”
