NY Liberty vs. Dallas Wings preview: Wings back for more

Two days after a depleted Liberty team beat the Wings by 20, Dallas is back at Barclays hoping for a better outcome. Since the WNBA rekindled their season after the end of the Olympic break, the New York Liberty are once again proving their dominance, having won each of their last three games by double digits. Going back to early July before Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu won gold in Paris, the winning streak is now at seven.
On Tuesday, even without two starters, the Libs put together a convincing 20 point win against the Dallas Wings, even without Ionescu who was troubled by neck pain. The win came with dominance in all facets of the game, the Liberty out rebounding the Wings 47-28 (Breanna and Jonquel each grabbing 12), or Courtney Vandersloot controlling the pace of the game with her first double-double of the year and her 11th against the Wings. That’s the most any player has had against a franchise in WNBA history.
The Liberty were able to neutralize key Wings players in their victory with their defense as well. After scoring 13 points in the first half, Arike Ogunbowale was only able to score four more for the rest of the game due to off-ball defense of Kayla Thornton and Marquesha Davis. When a 20 PPG scorer simply isn’t able to participate in multiple possessions, it allows the Liberty to have the advantage for most of the game, and that is exactly what happened.
Where to follow the game
Catch the game on My9 and Prime Video as well as the Liberty Live app starting at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Injuries
It’s looking like Betnijah Laney-Hamilton will be missing the action once again as she continues to recover from her knee procedure. No word yet on her return. Sabrina Ionescu and Leonie Fiebich are questionable due to neck and rib injuries, respectively.
The Game
Liberty fans should expect to get the same result as they were able to get on Tuesday night. The last matchup proved that the Liberty is just on a different tier than the Wings in terms of winning basketball. When the Liberty are on offense, the ball moves around, each player gets to their spot with efficiency, and they are able to feed off of the moment. And that’s without two starters.
With their loss Tuesday, Dallas is now 6-21. Only the Atlanta Dream and the Los Angeles Sparks have a (slightly) worse record at 6-22. Did the Wings learn anything Tuesday?
Player To Watch
Despite not having the best night, the Liberty still need to make sure they can take Arike Ogunbowale out of the play tonight. On Tuesday, Ogunbowale proved in the first half why she is a top offensive player in the league. Utilizing the pick-and-roll, Ogunbowale’s ball handling and shooting ability was effective and kept the Wings in the game at times.
Also, of course, the Wings boast one of the game’s best bigs, Satou Sabally who had 24 points for the Wings, giving her 44 in two games after missing the first 25 games of the season, She’ll be seeing some action vs. her sister, the Liberty’s Nyara who finished with five points and five boards in 19 minutes.
One challenge, the Liberty can’t be looking ahead to Saturday night’s big game against the Connecticut Sun.
