With summer quickly approaching, you should take extra care to protect your skin while traveling the friendly skies.
Absolute Collagen Head Scientist Dr. Dave Reilly explained what happens to your skin on a flight and certain conditions that make it worse.
“If you are a nervous flyer, then high levels of stress can also contribute to skin breakouts or flare-ups,” he said.
He noted that all plane rides can impact the appearance of our skin, even if it’s a short one.
“This is because humidity levels on aircrafts drop significantly, while its air conditioner is also often at full blast,” he explained.
In conjunction with the recycled air that circulates a plane, these factors can be incredibly dehydrating for your skin.
As a result, your face can look dull and puffy during a flight.
“If you suffer with sensitive skin, then your skin may become dry and irritated on an airplane, while those with oilier skin types may experience excess oil and even breakouts,” he added.
Fortunately, Dr. Reilly shared beauty hacks to do before and during your flight to avoid your skin looking “worse for wear” when you land.
EMBRACE THE EYE
“The skin around our eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on our whole body,” he explained.
When faced with low humidity and recycled air, your under-eyes can show it and experience drying and dehydration the most.
Dr. Reilly said that’s why you need to always apply a nourishing eye cream to your under-eye before boarding.
Get one that is specifically formulated to help with under-eye sensitivity.
“Keep the eye cream in your hand luggage so that you can either re-apply during the journey or once you land, depending on how long your flight is,” he suggested.
REGULAR REHYDRATION
Another thing Dr. Reilly said to do before the flight is to apply hydrating face cream to lock in moisture.
The type of moisturizer you use depends on your skin type.
“As a rule of thumb, those with oily or clog-prone skin should look for lighter, water-based moisturizers, while thicker more intensive creams are ideal for more mature or dry skin types,” he explained.
But to combat the impact that flying can have on your skin, you also need to keep it hydrated.
“Mini hydrating mists are perfect to keep in your hand luggage to give your skin a quick boost, and they have cooling properties which are ideal for hotter climates too,” he said.
He also suggested putting on a sheet mask full of hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid or niacinamide.
Also, don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the flight.
DON’T SKIP THE SPF
Lastly, no matter where you’re going, make sure not to miss out on SPF, which has great anti-aging benefits.
If you’re traveling somewhere sunny, you’re probably going to put on sunscreen anyway, but you should be reaching for it before you get on your light too.
Dr. Reilly said this is more important than ever, especially when flying.
“SPF is an essential skincare step to protect your skin from sun exposure and harmful ultraviolet light [UVB], which can cause premature signs of aging and discoloration,” he said.
