SMU sets the standard high for 2025 OL Devinn Farris
2025 Houston (Tex.) Heights offensive tackle Devinn Farris took his SMU official visit last month and the Mustangs impressed in a big way.
“It was everything I could hope for and more. Dallas is a great city, great to be out here,” Farris told On3. “They’ve got a whole bunch of different things. All of the coaching staff and coaches, it just made everything more great.
“I know it’s the first one, but they set the standard really high. Me going to other programs, I’m going to be like, okay, what did they do? Or what did they bring that SMU didn’t?”
What else stood out about the visit?
“Probably the education, Life After Ball, and the opportunities that SMU could contribute to student-athletes,” he said. “Because student comes first before anything. They’ve got a lot of connections out here. So I’m really stoked about that.”
SMU’s coaching staff made it feel like a family environment for him and that trickles down to the recruits’ families as well.
“It’s just a lot of love,” Farris said. “It feels like family. I feel like all the coaches around here are bought in on the 2025 class. I feel like the coaches, the team staff, the recruits, and even the parents know that this class is ready to turn an already great program to a powerhouse that can compete for National Championships.
“You might as well hop on that train right there. You might as well get in right now because right now is a great time to come to SMU. I feel like I can come in and I could be a key factor for real.”
SMU offensive line coach Garin Justice pitched him playing all over while current Mustang Justin Osborne gave Justice plenty of praise.
“Coach said I could play anything,” Farris said. “I know I’m very versatile. I can play tackle, guard. I can even snap the ball sometimes if I have to. Whatever coach Justice needs me to do to make sure that the team is good, I’m going to do it.
“I talked to J .O. and everything. He’s like real cool people. He said he got a lot of trust in coach Justice. He said that being (with) coach Justice with the O-Line actually flipped his whole life around in football actually. I’m thankful for that.”
Watching a pair of offensive linemen in Drew Hill and Jacob Maiava commit made him think about doing just that.
“It’s real tempting. Makes you want to try to make a little decision, but it’s just great,” he said. “I know that SMU is a great program. There’s gonna be a lot more athletes coming around the country and seeing this program too. I’m not surprised they’re committing. It’s a great program for real.”
Farris plans to officially visit programs like Oklahoma State, Houston, Maryland, Mississippi State and Pitt in June before making a decision before his senior season.
According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, SMU leads the way for Farris. On3 ranks him as the No. 59 interior offensive lineman in the country and No. 145 overall prospect in Texas.
