Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese secure wild records in Fever-Sky clash
The Indiana Fever are visiting the Chicago Sky on Sunday in another exciting matchup between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, as both are continuing to develop and get better throughout their rookie seasons in the WNBA. Before the game ended, both Clark and Reese made history with their efforts in the contest.
For Caitlin Clark, she is the first rookie since 2009 to have a double-double with points and rebounds, and a double-double with points and assists, according to StatMamba. It shows that Clark brings a lot to the Fever. Angel Reese has now recorded eight straight double-doubles, which is the fourth longest streak in WNBA history, according to StatMamba. While Reese has some areas of her game to work on, she has shown a lot of promise, especially from the rebounding perspective.
This is a key game for both the Fever and the Sky. The Fever are holding one of the last playoff spots with a 7-10 record overall, which is good for seventh in the league, while the Sky are 5-9 overall and half of a game back of both the Fever and the Atlanta Dream for the final two playoff spots. It would be big for the Sky to get a win, given the fact that they are 0-2 in matchups against the Fever so far this season.
Given where both the Fever and Sky were last season, it would be a big accomplishment for both teams to make the playoffs with Clark and Reese making impacts. Neither team is expected to be a real contender to go deep into the playoffs and be a threat for a title, but a playoff trip would provide valuable experience for both teams.
How are Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese faring in their rookie seasons?
So far this season, Clark is averaging 16.2 points per game with 5.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists, which is not bad for a rookie, although she would like to bring up her efficiency, as she is shooting 39.6% from the field and 33.8% from three, according to Basketball Reference. Clark also will want to cut down on the turnovers as her career progresses.
As for Reese, she is averaging 12.4 points with 10.8 rebounds per game, according to Basketball Reference. The rebounding numbers are very impressive, and it is in line with what was expected from her based on her college career. Similar to Clark, Reese would like to improve her efficiency, as she is shooting 38.6% from the field this season.
It will be interesting to see if both players can improve throughout the season, as they have basically been playing non-stop since the start of the 2023-2024 college basketball season. With the Olympic break approaching, the games after that could be telling for both Clark and Reese.
