Legacy Ben Hanks Jr. says Florida isn’t trailing as much as many believe
One of the Florida Gators’ more anticipated official visitors returns to Gainesville in less than two weeks, as cornerback Ben Hanks Jr. takes his OV on June 7-9.
It will mark the 4-star prospect’s first trip to the Swamp since camping last summer.
Hanks, who attends Miami Booker T. Washington, is the son of former Florida All-SEC linebacker Ben Hanks.
“Mine and Florida’s connection is going good. They communicate with me more often and I speak with the DBs coach, coach (Will) Harris,” Hanks told Gators Online.
“Coach Harris is a great coach and comes from a great background being from the pros. I can really learn a lot of things from coach Harris. He is a great coach and stands out to me. I feel like he’s an energetic coach, but definitely seeing him in person will be more better.”
Multiple connections to Florida are in place
If you are a high-major recruit in the Sunshine State, the University of Florida likely checks off several boxes as a contender. Being in the SEC along with having an elite reputation in the classroom are two of them.
For Hanks though, it’s difficult to look past his family connections to the program.
“Definitely because my father went there and my other sister graduated from there, so the family culture of people going to Florida (stands out),” said Hanks. “Also, the mentality Florida has and greatness they have produced over the years. They’re definitely a big option for me.”
However, Hanks says there is no extra pressure to relocate to Alachua County.
“They don’t really say too much about it,” Hanks said of his family.
Official visits will be key for Ben Hanks Jr.
It’s no secret the Gators have some catching up to do with Hanks. Much of that is due to him only visiting once over the past few years. You have hometown Miami trending in the right direction too, boasting odds of 42.2 percent in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.
That makes the upcoming visit that much more important for both parties involved.
“I just want to go up there to Florida to see campus, see the environment there and whether I want to go there. Also, how the coaches coach and mostly just have fun,” said Hanks.
With that said, how much ground does Florida need to gain before becoming a stronger contender?
“Florida is a factor regardless. They don’t really have to do too much,” Hanks said. “I just want to go there and see what I want to see coming from a prospect standpoint.”
Additional schools on Hanks’ official visit schedule include Louisville (May 31), Georgia (June 14), Florida State (June 18) and Miami (June 21).
Hanks, according to the On300 rankings, is the No. 71 prospect and No. 9 cornerback in his class.
