Essex County 'Cops 4 Kids' Chapter Earns Awards At State Competition
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The following news release comes courtesy of the Essex County Chapter of New Jersey Cops 4 Kids. Find out how to post announcements or events to your local Patch site.The Essex County Chapter of New Jersey Cops 4 Kids participated in the New Jersey Law Enforcement Youth Academy held at Drew University in Madison, where they received the Director’s Trophy. Competing with 10 other police youth programs, the Essex County team earned more than 20 awards in categories including Narcotics Investigation, Domestic Violence, Motor Vehicle Stops, Burglary in Progress, Report Writing, and Physical Fitness.Several individuals earned top awards: Sole Blume received the Bottom-Line Award for her understanding of law enforcement values, and James Russell got the “I Got Your Back Award” for supporting team well-being. Anthony Cruz was named “Best Overall Male in Physical Fitness” and won the Top Cop Award for exemplifying the academy’s highest standards. Damne Gonzalez and Samiah Velasquez-Vargas were recognized as Top Female Physical Fitness winners in their phases.Abraham Ehiosa received several distinctions: the Top Male Physical Fitness Award in his phase, the Academy Leadership Award (selected by academy participants), and the Candidate of Choice Award following interviews with three law enforcement executive officers.This year’s youth academy was attended by nearly 100 Cadets and Police Explorers from Atlantic Highlands, Bayonne, Elizabeth, Fairlawn, Highlands, Jackson, Manalapan, Middletown, Ocean Township, and West New York. This marks the third occasion in four years that the Essex County delegation has received the championship.Essex County Cops 4 Kids is a Newark-based nonprofit organization that provides activities and mentorship for youth aged 6–18. While it emphasizes law enforcement careers, the program also supports other career interests through practical experiences, mentorship, and guidance.Program Director Armando Aviles, a retired Essex County Sheriff’s Investigator, stated that the organization has produced several police officers to date and currently has two members in the Newark Police Academy and one in the New Jersey State Corrections Academy, all of whom are scheduled to graduate in August. Two participants from this year’s Youth Academy , Samiah Velasquez-Vargas and Jeffrey Rodriguez are currently engaged in the hiring process for the Newark Department of Public Safety Police Division and are expected to enter the Newark Police Academy in September.Send local news tips and correction requests to [email protected].
