Margot Robbie, Booksmart director Olivia Wilde, and Poor Things screenwriter Tony McNamara are teaming up... to bring a Rob Liefeld comic to the big screen
We’re calling it now: Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld’s Avengelyne will be at the very least one of the more interesting comic book movies hitting theaters in the next few years, with Warner Bros currently in the process of closing a deal to bring the character to the big screen.
For those who weren’t around in the 1990s when the character made her debut — she appeared in two solo-series from Liefeld’s Maximum Press, as well as a number of spin-offs and crossovers, before moving to Awesome Entertainment, Avatar Press, and ultimately Image Comics in following years — Avengelyne is a fallen angel banished from Heaven and sent to Earth to continue her mission fighting demons and pushing the apocalypse off ever further. (It was the 1990s; that kind of thing happened a lot back then.)
Perhaps fittingly for a comic inspired in part by an actress — Cathy Christian, who was known in the 1990s as a model for promotional Vampirella appearances — there have been multiple attempts to bring Avengelyne to the screen; Gina Carano was behind an effort in 2013, with A Beautiful Mind and Batman Forever screenwriter (and current Star Trek executive producer) Akiva Goldsman marshaling an entirely separate attempt three years later.
