Packers vote in new ‘de facto owner’
The Green Bay Packers are set for a change in leadership next summer after they named their new chairman, president and CEO on Monday. Following a unanimous vote, the Packers have elected Ed Policy as their next front office leader, the team announced. Policy will take over for current president and CEO Mark Murphy in July 2025 following Murphy’s 70th birthday.
“Congratulations to Ed on this well-deserved promotion to what I believe is the most unique and meaningful position in the world of professional sports,” Murphy said in a statement. “Ed has been a tremendous asset to the organization during his 12 years here and has been greatly instrumental in our success.
“In the coming year, he and I will continue to work closely together to ensure a smooth transition for our employees, players and fans.”
Policy has been with the Packers for 12 seasons, the last seven as their chief operating officer. He will be the 11th CEO in Packers history. The Packers Board of Directors carried out the vote on Monday.
“This is the absolute best job in sports,” Policy said. “We are the stewards of the most iconic and unique organization in all of professional sports. I am excited to continue to work with so many talented teammates who have ensured the Packers’ consistent success on and off the field. We are the people’s team, and I love being a part of it.”
Before joining the Packers, Policy spent parts of nine years with the Arena Football League, the last two as commissioner, president and CEO in 2008 and 2009. His father was part of the San Francisco 49ers front office from 1981 to 1997, spending seven years as president and CEO. Carmen Policy won five Super Bowls with the Niners in his various roles.
Packers officially begin new era after surprise playoff run in 2023

The Packers flew under the radar in 2023 but that probably won’t be the case in 2024. After a spectacular finish to the season and being one good fourth quarter away from the NFC Championship Game, Green Bay is poised to continue its ascent this year.
The Packers and Detroit Lions will battle it out for the NFC North crown, but both teams are expected to make the NFC playoffs. Both teams won playoff games last year and nearly played for a spot in the Super Bowl after they split their regular season series.
Jordan Love made believers out of a lot of people. He will be a popular MVP pick this fall. Head coach Matt LaFleur continues to be one of the best head coaches in the NFL. Green Bay has a .675 winning percentage and three playoff victories in five seasons under LeFleur.
The Packers are consistently one of the most well-run organizations in North American sports. Although their unique operation never caught on among other American sports franchises, the Packers remain committed to their ownership structure as it has proven successful for over 60 years. Green Bay selecting its next CEO a year in advance shows how committed they are to thinking every aspect of the organization through.
Green Bay is respected on and off the field, a badge that few franchises can resemble. The Packers surely have their rivals, but few teams can emulate the success that Green Bay has had since its inception in 1919.
The Packers could be a consistent contender for the next five years and no one should be surprised by that. They’ll at the very least be a fun team to watch in 2024.
