Hampton Roads students can learn about Chesapeake Bay, environment through summer program
Horizons Hampton Roads launches its summer program for area students on Tuesday.
This year’s theme focuses on fostering environmental stewardship and raising awareness about the interconnectedness of our actions to the health of the Chesapeake Bay and all natural resources, the nonprofit said in a news release.
Students participating in the five-week program will learn about the Chesapeake Bay watershed through STEM lessons and explore topics such as climate science, human impact on the bay, sea level rise and more.
The program, for students from kindergarten through eighth grade, will include coastal explorations, installation of native or rain gardens, community and civic engagement initiatives, beach, park or public space cleanups and rain barrel/catchment system challenges.
In addition to the K-8 summer program, Horizons Hampton Roads will launch an internship program for high school students. The pilot program will provide 10 to 15 students with micro-internships to explore various businesses, learn about different jobs, and discuss possible career paths within our community.
