Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is probably one of the most hated sequels in the film’s franchise. This was primarily because the director of the film, Rob Marshall decided to move away from the original cast that was featured in the first three films of the series.

Moreover, a noticeable downgrade in the film’s quality was noticed as well, which made the fans of the series less than impressed. However, Johnny Depp believed that the film would indeed be a huge hit at the box office.

He said,
Oh what a treat, you know. I mean every filmmaker’s different, every filmmaker has a different approach. But I mean [heâ€s] a treat, a real gift. I mean first and foremost he’s a wonderful man, very kind and collaborative, with fantastic ideas. And a brilliant sort of handle on scene and story and shape, I suppose. Yeah he’s really special.
A major criticism of the film was how it was experimenting by featuring different ideas in the film, which divided the fans. However, it was not Rob Marshall who decided to perform experiments in the sequel, but Johnny Depp, as he opened up about contributing heavily to the film’s script.

One of the major concerns of the film was how the viewers despised the presence of different ideas in the film, which did not resonate well. The viewers and critics gave it a mediocre score of 33% on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans believed it was Marshall who preferred these ideas until Depp decided to shed light on the film’s unique approach.

In the same interview with Collider, Depp mentioned how he had immensely contributed to the film’s script making it different from the previous films He said,
Well it is like going into a think tank basically, you know. And just kind of throwing ideas around, if something sparks, it sparks. And if they accept it, they accept it, and thankfully they did, I mean hopefully for the better.
He further continued how the crew of the film were “very receptive” to his idea and wanted to keep the film “very fresh“ so they tried various things to “keep things different.” Depp added,
But no, they were very receptive to just kind of throwing ideas around, just to make it different and to keep it very fresh. As opposed to just,’Well here comes another one,’ you know another sequel or something. But just to try to, try to keep things different.
Despite the film not meeting the expectations of the viewers because it was different, it did not disappoint at the box office because as per The Numbers, the film generated a whopping $1 billion worldwide.
