PA 2nd Congressional District Race Preview: Boyle Vs Bashir
PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania's 2nd Congressional District, formerly the 13th District, has been under Rep. Brendan Boyle's tutelage since 2015. Voters on Nov. 5 will decide if a changing of the guard is needed, as the Democrat faces a familiar foe in Republican Aaron Bashir.Boyle, a Philadelphia native, took over the 13th District in 2015 after serving the 170th District in the Pennsylvania legislature for six years.A Harvard graduate, Boyle resigned his seat in 2013 to run for the 13th Congressional District, winning the seat, then winning it again in 2016 having run unopposed.He was handily reelected in 2018 in the now 2nd Congressional District, and in 2022 strongly defeated Bashir in his reelection bid.Boyle serves on the House Budget Committee, the House Ways and Means Committee, and founded the Blue Collar Caucus.He's endorsed by nearly two dozen labor unions, the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, House Majority Leader Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and Philadelphia Controller Alan Butkovitz.Bashir is in his second bid to take over the 2nd District from Boyle. In the 2022 election, Bashir got 45,454 votes to Boyle's 141,229.According to Bashir's campaign, he aims to fight for senior citizens, constituents with disabilities, working families, veterans, and small business owners."America needs God back," his website reads. "Without God, America has no hope."After immigrating to the United States in 2001 from Pakistan and becoming a citizen in 2006, Bashir earned an MBA from Lasalle University and a Bachelor’s degree from Temple University.
