Multiple Tornadoes Hit Pittsburgh Area: Latest Update
PITTSBURGH, PA — The National Weather Service confirmed that three tornadoes hit in and around the Pittsburgh area late Friday afternoon: on Washington Boulevard near the Highland Park Bridge, near Lincoln-Mount Vernon-Elrama in Allegheny County and near Harrison City in Westmoreland County. There were no reports of injuries or extensive damage. Crews were on the scene near the Highland Park Bridge shortly after the storm hit to remove downed trees, which also were reported at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Various social media posts showed the twisters themselves, but not much destruction.Less than an hour after that twisters, Duquesne Light was reporting about 1,300 customers in the Pittsburgh area were without power.The tornadoes struck around 5 p.m. All storm warnings had been cancelled in the Pittsburgh area as of 6 p.m.There was no immediate word on how strong the tornadoes were. The weather service likely will have information on the severity of all the storms sometime on Saturday.Friday's twisters brought the total number of tornadoes to hit Southwestern Pennsylvania in the last week to six.On May 11, the weather service confirmed three tornadoes: in Finleyville in Washington County, the New Salem area in Fayette County and Fike Run in Fayette County.
