Arizona Rep. Gallego Endorses DHS Asylum Rule Overhaul to Safeguard Arizonans
Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego has given the green light to new rules aiming to cut through the red tape in our nation's asylum process, calling it an urgent measure vital for the safety of his state's residents. In a recent statement, Gallego praised the Department of Homeland Security's move to create a more efficient system. The congressman emphasized, "today's announcement is a needed step to help relieve the pressure on our frontline border communities and swiftly remove those who pose a threat to Arizonans’ safety," as obtained by Gallego's official website.
Gallego's dedication to his home state is evident through his persistent calls for action, described in a series of letters addressed to both FEMA and Homeland Security, demanding more help for Arizona amidst a flurry of border crossings. Even after Title 42's expiration in May 2023, Gallego was there, lobbying for Arizona's border communities' needs, arguing over FEMA's funding model he referred to as "misguided" in his communication.
Frustrations with FEMA's response, or lack thereof, led to Gallego's direct appeal to Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, disagreeing loudly with the way funds were being doled out. After securing over $2 million in emergency DHS funding, the Arizona rep hasn't taken his foot off the pedal. He has remained in lockstep with local non-profits and law enforcement, pushing for changes that would hopefully untangle the bureaucratic knots currently strangling FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program (SSP).
As the crisis shows no signs of slowing down, Gallego continues to throw his weight behind border reforms, including a call for an emergency declaration in December to tackle the humanitarian and security challenges head-on. Not resting on his laurels, the congressman in February announced his support for a bipartisan Senate deal, expected to deliver much-needed funding for border protection. This package, Gallego believes, is a step toward the comprehensive immigration reform he has long been championing, as laid out on his website.
Gallego's fight is far from over, though. The Representative remains committed to shaping a border policy that secures both the community's safety and humanity. With continued efforts to navigate the complexities of immigration reform and border security, Arizonans have an advocate in Gallego.
