tank strike that killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar
By Zoe Hussain
Newly released drone footage shows the tank strike that took out Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar in a routine raid that caught the Oct. 7 mastermind by surprise — as photos also reveal the massive cache of weapons found inside the building with the terrorist.
On Wednesday, trainee troops from the Israel Defense Forces’ Battalion 450 infantry unit encountered Hamas soldiers while searching for Hamas tunnels in the southern city of Rafah, according to the military.
The terrorists opened fire on the unit, prompting the soldiers to return fire — striking the Hamas militants, who then fled into two adjacent buildings.

Aerial footage shows the moment the IDF opened fire on one of the buildings, and unknowingly killed its number one target.
During scans conducted by the troops the following morning, the body of Sinwar was identified.
The IDF also released images of the weapons found where Sinwar was killed, including three rifles and ammunition.

Sinwar was confirmed dead in the untargeted attack by IDF and the Israel Security Agency, better known as Shin Bet, which had been hunting Sinwar for over a year.
In a final act of defiance, additional footage showed Sinwar tossing a piece of wood in a futile attempt to take out the recon drone before the soldiers opened fire again.
Graphic photos also showed the Hamas leader and Oct. 7 mastermind lying lifeless in a pile of rubble after he was killed in the tank blast.

Sinwar’s death has been hailed by US and Israeli officials as a major blow to Hamas with the potential of ending the war in Gaza and freeing the remaining 97 hostages who were abducted on Oct. 7.
“To the people of Gaza, I have a simple message,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. “This war can end tomorrow.
“It can end if Hamas lays down its arms and returns our hostages. Israel will guarantee the safety of all those who return our hostages,” Netanyahu added.
