Wimbledon: ‘Severely Undercooked’ Jessica Pegula Forces Andy Roddick to Question Bettors’ Strange Odds
Jessica Pegula played it safe the whole year! But now it’s time to put her foot down, as Wimbledon steps near. As the event approaches, the American tennis legend Andy Roddick came forward to encourage the 30-year-old American player and made a clear bet on her for the big event coming up.
In a recent episode of Tennis Channel’s live podcast, while talking about how Pegula might perform at Wimbledon, Roddick talked about her attitude towards the event and tennis. He stated, “I am a massive fan. I think it’s potentially her biggest upside, the ability to switch directions, the low center of gravity. The fact that she gets a little help on her serve her ability to come forward, return, it all works on grass.”
Pegula had a bad start to the 2024 season, losing the Australian Open early on. Nevertheless, injuries derailed her progress when she was playing on hard courts in North America. She was forced to miss the entire clay-court season due to a rib injury that grew worse while she was competing in the Billie Jean King Cup.
Further, he added, “So I understand she hasn’t been past the quarters. But, the, the betting odds right now, have her severely undercooked, especially if she gets enough matches.” Looking into that, it won’t be wrong to say that the former US Open champion, is ready to bet on Pegula this Wimbledon.
With Wimbledon and the Olympics in Paris approaching, the 30-year-old tennis player made the sensible decision to forgo the clay-court season. She said, “The treatment for both of them is the same. So let’s take the safe route, treat it like a stress fracture. It’s just such a crazy year with the Olympics squeezed in. With my game, I’d rather be ready for grass and the rest of the hard-court season and grind out the rest of the year, than try and push it for clay and it doesn’t feel well. That’s why we played it safe.”
However, the former third-ranked player will be seen participating in the Paris Olympics, alongside her doubles partner, Coco Gauff, as a part of the US tennis team.
Jessica Pegula to participate in the Paris Olympics
The 30-year-old tennis player is one of eleven athletes chosen to compete for the United States in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Pegula, who is presently ranked fifth in the world, will participate in both the singles and doubles competitions.
The Buffalo native, who is competing in the women’s singles division alongside Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro, and Gauff, will be attending the Olympics for the second time in her career. In addition, athletes like artistic swimmer Anita Alvarez and volleyball player Matt Anderson will represent the United States in Paris the following month.
