Singer Brandon Casey from the hit group, Jagged Edge, was involved in a severe car accident that left him with multiple broken bones and a fractured skull.
Casey, 42, turned to Instagram on Tuesday (July 16) to open up about how he almost lost his life in the car wreck. He wrote, “have to send a big Thank you to @grady.hospital after bein in iCU for five days I know the legendary Grady Trauma Center is everything it’s said to Be the Best in the country y’all saved my life and I’m forever grateful.”
While Casey didn’t offer many details on the incident that led to his hospitalization, the “Where the Party At” singer said he sustained a broken neck, five broken ribs, a skull fracture, scalp lacerations and “a bunch of pain all over my body.”
In another post where he shared a picture of mangled car crash, he added, “I never post these type pictures upon delivering the news that I been hurt cuz the people who really love me don’t play about me and I don’t wanna add to they fright of how I may be doin but ima jus post this jus so u kno neither wreck was a fender Bender I could be probably should be dead oh except the Big fact that God does protect his Flock. …But ima be good I promise y’all God got me it’s like something tryna take me off this planet and god keep telling ’em nope not him not yet … all praises to the most high most awesome most wonderful God Thank u lord!!!! What Brandon’s Recovery Looks Like
For Brandon, healing will most likely take at least 6-8 weeks.
In his case, if he injured other body organs or developed any complication, such as a flail segment of your chest or trouble breathing, he may need to stay in the hospital. Otherwise, he may be able to heal at home. Most people with broken ribs do not need surgery.
In the emergency room, he probably received (and may still be receiving) a strong medicine (such as a nerve block or narcotics) in order to relieve the severe pain.
He will not have a binder or a bandage around his chest because these would keep his ribs from moving when he breathe or cough. This may compromise respiratory function, or lead to a lung infection (pneumonia).
His provider may prescribe the use of an incentive spirometer, a device to help him keep expanding his lungs regularly while his fractures heal. He may be able to hold a pillow gently against his chest while using the incentive spirometer or when coughing to reduce discomfort.
According to the Mayo Clinic, to help prevent a collapsed lung or lung infection, Casey will most likely have to do slow deep-breathing and gentle coughing exercises every 2 hours. Holding a pillow or blanket against his injured rib can make these less painful. His provider may tell him to use a device called an incentive spirometer to help with the breathing exercises. These exercises help prevent a partial lung collapse and pneumonia.
For a full recovery to get back on the stage singing, it is important for Casey to stay active. Do not rest in bed all day. His provider will talk with him about when he can return to everyday activities, work, and sports or other high impact activity.
While he heals, Casey would have to avoid movements that put painful pressure on his ribs. These include doing crunches and pushing, pulling, or lifting heavy objects.
This is Not his First Time in an Accident
Jagged Edge initially signed to record producer Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Recordings, is best known for their string of hit singles including “Let’s Get Married” and “Where the Party At” (featuring Nelly), most of which were produced by Dupri. The group’s members include identical twin lead singers Brian and Brandon Casey as well as Richard Wingo and Kyle Norman.
This isn’t the first time Casey has spoken about his troubles behind the wheel. In September 2023, Casey alluded to being in a car crash when he shared a photo of a damaged vehicle on social media.
