On300 EDGE Marco Jones goes in-depth on weekend official visit to Michigan
Michigan hosted five Top 150 recruits for official visits this weekend, including On300 Danville (Calif.) San Roman Valley EDGE Marco Jones.
Jones, was just on campus for an unofficial visit in the spring, loved his return trip to Ann Arbor and got a more in-depth look at the program both on and off the field.
“It was awesome,” Jones said. “From the weather to the whole community aspect of it. My favorite part was learning about the internships and life after football. Their whole coaching staff is super cool. The way that they interact with the players when nobody is watching shows they care about the players — everybody from the stars to the walk-ons. It’s a really tight brotherhood.”
This visit gave Jones more individual time with new defensive line coach Lou Esposito and new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.
“(Meetings) went really well,” Jones said. “They had the same message for me — I’m a fit. They take pride in having not just good football players but good people. They talked to me about how the defense is really advanced but simple. I think it’s a great scheme. I feel like I would fit in well because they need edge rushers.
“No matter what, you are always going to play with elite guys around you at Michigan, especially on the defensive side of the ball. You want to play with other great guys. That’s how you win. I think they are awesome guys. They were super easy to talk to.”
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was also heavily involved on Jones’ visit and had a similar pitch.
“He sees me excelling,” Jones said. “His message was along the same lines — he thinks I’m a fit. He really wanted me to understand the culture and the family aspect of it. It’s really all love in that community.”
Michigan also got a boost from a couple of its players.
“I was with Rayshaun Benny most of the time,” Jones said. “He’s a great guy. He gave us a lot of good advice. He talked to us about going through the process. I also got to talk to Zeke Berry, who is another Bay Area guy. It was great to be able to chop it up with him and just see how he enjoys it and how the transition was from the Bay Area to Michigan.”
When it came to presentations, Jones said he was most impressed with U-M’s approach with internships and networking.
“They provide internships for the players in May during their off time, and that really caught my eye. They are doing great things on the field, winning national championships and putting players in the league every year. But it’s still cool to see how they help the guys. It’s one team and one family. Even if you do go to the NFL, things could happen and there is still life after football. It’s cool they offer a lot of internships around the country.
“I think it’s really smart. It makes guys think about the NIL aspect and work for the NIL. They don’t just hand you money. They educate kids about NIL. That shows their character and how they care about the players not just as athletes but as real people.”
So where does Michigan stand coming out of the visit?
“It’s hard for me to say right now,” Jones said. “I haven’t had a chance to get out to my official visits. I might have the answer in a few weeks. But I can’t give you a true answer since this is the only OV that I’ve been on.”
While Jones doesn’t have a firm answer, it’s clear Michigan is a major contender along with Texas, Texas A&M and USC. The latter three are set to receive official visits over the next few weeks. Jones is looking to make a decision on or around July 2.
At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Jones is ranked as the No. 20 EDGE and No. 150 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking.
