Newsstand: Why Notre Dame women’s basketball was a transfer portal winner
On3’s Talia Goodman listed 10 teams as winners of the spring transfer portal cycle in NCAA women’s basketball. Notre Dame was one of them.
Joining the Irish on the list were the USC Trojans, Maryland Terrapins, TCU Horned Frogs, UCLA Bruins, Kentucky Wildcats, LSU Tigers, Oregon Ducks, UConn Huskies and Oklahoma Sooners.
“The Notre Dame Fighting Irish made a splash in the transfer portal long after most chose to do so, but they added sizable talent through two big-time additions,” Goodman wrote.
“Notre Dame added Marquette transfer Liza Karlen, a 6-2 forward who averaged 17.7 points and 7.9 rebounds last season. She’ll bring depth to the forward position and versatility that will only aid the Irish. Pittsburgh transfer Liatu King also joined Notre Dame. King was a first-team All-ACC selection last season, averaging a double-double with 18.8 points and 10.4 rebounds.”
The Irish only lost reserve center Nat Marshall to the portal, so it was a net gain in terms of quantity for head coach Niele Ivey and company to bring in two all-conference players while only seeing a bench player depart. The Irish will also welcome five-star center Kate Koval to campus this summer for extra front-court help.
