2,492-Carat Diamond Found In Botswana: Here Is How Much It Is Worth?

A massive diamond, the largest discovered in over a century, was recently unearthed at the Karowe Mine in Botswana. Weighing in at an astonishing 2,492 carats, this gem is now recognized as the second-largest diamond ever found from a mine. Botswana's President Mokgweetsi Masisi introduced the impressive stone at his office Thursday. “It is overwhelming,” Masisi said. “I am lucky to have seen it in my time.”The diamond, found by Lucara Diamond Corp., a Canadian mining company, is described as an "exceptional" and "high-quality" rough stone that was discovered intact using advanced X-ray technology. Lucara’s President and CEO, William Lamb, celebrated the find, saying, “We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond.” This diamond surpasses the Sewelo diamond, which was previously the second-largest diamond from a mine at 1,758 carats, also discovered at the Karowe Mine in 2019.As the world's second-largest producer of natural diamonds, Botswana has unearthed some of the most significant stones in recent history, with the Karowe Mine being particularly notable. The mine has produced several large diamonds over 1,000 carats in the past decade, including the 1,111-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond and The Constellation, which sold for a record $63 million in 2016. Currently, officials have not determined the value or sale method of the newly discovered diamond. The Cullinan Diamond, a larger 3,106-carat gem discovered in South Africa in 1905, remains the largest mined diamond. Meanwhile, Botswana’s mining industry continues to make headlines with its discoveries of these extraordinary gems.(With AP inputs)
