Fighting Irish opponent notables
• Davenport went 3-25 last season as a member of the GLIAC in Division II.
• Mercyhurst is competing at the Division I level for the first time this season. The Lakers are coming off an 18-11 season in their final year as a DII program. No better way to ratchet up the level of competition than to play Notre Dame in South Bend, eh?
• Notre Dame and Purdue are deadlocked at 14 wins apiece in the all-time series between the two rivals. The Fighting Irish easily took care of the Boilermakers last December and are looking to win their eighth in a row against them.
• Notre Dame has never beaten James Madison. The Dukes have a 2-0 all-time edge in the series and last won in 1988.
• This will only be the second all-time meeting between the Irish and Lafayette. The Blue and Gold won the first meeting in convincing fashion last December.
• The Irish have an all-time 8-2 series lead over USC, but this is a Trojans team — one certainly with its eyes on the Final Four returning reigning Freshman of the Year Juju Watkins and adding one of the best recruiting classes in the country.
• Texas is also a team with its sights set on the Final Four. The Longhorns made it to the Elite Eight last season and return many of the players who got them there in addition to a stellar signing class.
• UConn is UConn, folks, and Notre Dame has a chance to beat the Huskies in consecutive matchups for the first time since 2013. UConn has an all-time edge of 39-14, but the Irish could be turning things in their favor with Niele Ivey on the rise and Geno Auriemma in the twilight years of his career.
• Notre Dame is a combined 7-0 against Eastern Michigan and Loyola Maryland.
