Ex-Bravo Star Suffers $4 Million Loss In UES Apartment Sale
UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — One of the beloved stars from The Real Housewives of New York has finally sold her Upper East Side townhome, taking a hit of roughly $4 million in the process.Sonja Morgan, who was a main cast member on the hit reality franchise for eleven seasons, recently sold off her five-story residence during an online auction for less than half its purchase price, records show. The reality TV personality purchased the home at 162 East 63rd Street, situated between Lexington and Third Avenues, in 1998 alongside her then-husband, JPMorgan heir John Adams Morgan, for $9.1 million.Spanning an impressive 4,650 square feet, the townhouse boasts five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms. Throughout the years, the couple renovated the home, with its design overseen by the esteemed Harry Schnaper and John Pierre Borg, favorites of Architectural Digest magazine. The property, a familiar sight to fans of the hit Bravo series, was recently sold to the highest bidder in a no-reserve sale lasting nearly two weeks. While initially fetching $4.45 million, the final sale price, inclusive of a 12 percent buyer's premium, tallied up to $4.98 million, the Post first reported. Officials reported that the Manhattan home, initially listed at $7.5 million, began bidding on May 15 and closed on May 29. The auction was conducted by Concierge Auctions in collaboration with Adam Modlin, a veteran luxury real estate broker from the Modlin Group. Bidding was expected to commence within the range of $1.75 million to $3.75 million.Morgan initially listed the townhome in April 2013 for $9.95 million but struggled to find a buyer, resulting in it being intermittently on and off the market with fluctuating price adjustments over the next decade."This townhouse has been a cherished Morgan and Adams home for decades," Morgan said."Memories were made over the years, including hosting my daughter’s friends from boarding school and university, and so many noteworthy moments were filmed by NBC for Bravo and Peacock TV. Now, as an empty nester, I am ready to share this turnkey, easy-to-manage jewel over to someone new to enjoy as we did," she added. In 2010, Morgan filed for bankruptcy, facing approximately $19.8 million in debt. Despite listing $13.5 million in assets on her bankruptcy petition, she expressed in court papers that her "decision to seek bankruptcy relief was not an easy one, but unfortunately, I am at a crossroads in my life." Nearly five years later, her case reached a near-positive conclusion as creditors were compensated and the reality TV star retained ownership of the multimillion-dollar Manhattan townhome, records show.Photographs of the Lenox Hill home showcase a landscaped 35-foot garden complete with a fountain and a koi pond, as well as mosaic hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows that bathe the space in natural light."This townhouse is a perfect match for its Upper East Side neighborhood—elegant, stately, and New York through and through,” said Chad Roffers, co-founder and CEO of Concierge Auctions.
