This Iconic Fast Food Chain Hopes to Wrangle a Comeback After Nearly Going Out of Business

Imagine living in a world where there isn’t a McDonald’s on every corner. The home of the golden arches has become more or less synonymous with American cuisine, and it’s an institution that’s a small part of most of our lives. It would be odd to wake up one day to find that Mickey D’s wasn’t the behemoth brand we’ve come to recognize it as anymore—but business is fickle. It’s possible that the chain could fall victim to a changing economy or a shift in consumer preferences, and it wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened either.😋😋SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter🍳🍔There was an era when Howard Johnson’s and Chi Chi’s peppered every intersection, and chains like Burger Chef and Tastee-Freez were innovators in their respective categories. For all intents and purposes, those days are long gone and chains that were once in their heyday have either shrunk considerably or disappeared altogether. One old-fashioned chain in particular is hoping to wrangle a comeback after dropping from hundreds of locations down to just a few dozen, and it looks like they’re on the right track.Related: This Famous Taco Chain Is Offering a 'Shockingly Good' Menu Item Fans 'Devoured'Although it never quite disappeared, Roy Rogers, the all-American fast-food chain named after an icon of the silver screen, is more or less unknown to younger generations and those of us who don’t happen to live in the mid-Atlantic. The chain first opened its doors in 1968 and expanded rapidly, ballooning to over 640 locations at the height of its popularity. Today, that number is just over 40. Despite their dwindling numbers, the chain known for its classic American fare like roast beef, burgers, and fried chicken has recently begun the process of reexpansion by opening new locations around the company’s home in Maryland and Virginia. They’ve invested in store upgrades while keeping some of the chain's original charm, like their epic fixin’s bar full of toppings to customize meals, and it looks like their efforts might be paying off. Most recently, the brand opened a new location in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, prompting fans to generate a line that spilled out into the street. This is only the beginning, though. While they don’t necessarily have grand plans (yet), Jim and Pete Plamondon, the sons of Pete Sr., one of the original members of the team that created the brand, hope to reintroduce the iconic brand to a new generation of fans—and maybe chart new territory in the process.Related: McDonald's Is Overhauling Its Menu — Here's Why
