Tampa Gears Up for Thunderstorms and High Humidity as NWS Issues Rip Current and Flood Warnings
The National Weather Service in Tampa has released a forecast for the upcoming week, warning residents of the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Starting today, Tampa is set for partly sunny skies with temperatures rising to around 91 degrees Fahrenheit. High humidity will make it feel as oppressive as 103 degrees. While winds are expected to remain light, they may increase slightly in the afternoon. Despite the seemingly calm conditions, there is a 40% chance of precipitation later in the day.
As we proceed into the evening hours, the NWS reports that scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist into the early evening, with conditions gradually improving as the night progresses. Temperatures are forecasted to fall to about 76 degrees. A light and variable wind will continue overnight, and the chance of precipitation is expected to decrease slightly to 30%.
Furthermore, an ongoing high rip current risk remains in effect, as stipulated in the Coastal Hazard Message. This advisory affects multiple counties, such as Pinellas, Coastal Hillsborough, and Coastal Lee. According to the National Weather Service, "Dangerous rip currents expected," which pose sweeping hazards even for proficient swimmers. The warning is a consequence of long period swells caused by Tropical Depression Francine, and it will remain in place through Friday evening. Beachgoers are urged to heed the advice to swim near lifeguards and to not swim against the current if caught in a rip.
On a more pressing note, the NWS has also extended a Flood Warning for the Alafia River at Lithia affecting Hillsborough County, as well as other nearby areas. The river, which already surpasses its flood stage of 13.0 feet, is expected to marginally rise before it subsides below the flood stage by Sunday afternoon. Addressing the potential damage, the NWS report states, "At 13.0 feet, River Drive and Squirrel Run Way downstream of County Road 640 are completely covered by water." Local residents impacted by this minor flooding are urged to exercise caution and follow the recommended preparedness actions.
As Saturday rolls around, a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms is forecasted, mainly after 2 p.m. Continuing the weekly theme, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday will also experience a mix of partly sunny skies and intermittent thunderstorms in the afternoons.
