William & Mary football team climbs in both FCS polls

William & Mary (3-1) rose one spot to No. 11 in the Stats Perform Football Championship Subdivision rankings and one spot to No. 12 in the coaches’ poll Monday following its 34-24 triumph Saturday over Furman last Saturday.
Among other CAA teams, Villanova is sixth in both polls. Richmond and Albany are tied for 23rd in the coaches’ poll but aren’t ranked on the Stats Perform list.
Tribe’s McGill earns CAA honor
Tribe freshman safety TJ McGill was selected as the Coastal Athletic Association Rookie of the Week. He posted four tackles, broke up a pass and recorded his first college interception.
Norfolk State gains myriad awards
Norfolk State won numerous honors following Saturday’s 32-10 victory at VMI.
Wide receiver Jacquez Jones was the HBCU FCS National Player of the Week, as chosen by Stats Perform. He caught 12 passes for 143 yards, including a pair of first-half touchdowns. Jones matched the second-most receptions in an FCS game this season.
Quarterback Jalen Daniels earned BoxToRow HBCU National Co-Player of the Week honors. The sophomore completed 20 of 29 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 30 yards. He shared the award with North Carolina Central quarterback Walker Harris.
NSU’s Daylan Long earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. The defensive back registered the first pick-six for the Spartans since the 2019 season, intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown in the third quarter. He added four solo tackles and a pass breakup.
JMU, Hampton named Teams of Week
James Madison was named the Cheez-It National Team of the Week following its 70-50 win at North Carolina, as selected by the All-America Committee of the Football Writers Association of America.
The game featured multiple JMU records, including the most points in a game against an FBS opponent and as a member of the Sun Belt.
Meanwhile, Hampton was honored as the HBCU+ FCS National Team of the Week after its 27-21 victory over Howard. HBCU+ is the streaming platform of Urban Edge Network.
UVA guard captures ACC award
Virginia left guard Noah Josey was named the ACC’s Offensive Lineman of the Week, the first Cavalier to earn such an honor since 2021. He helped the Cavaliers rush for 384 yards from scrimmage in a 43-24 victory at Coastal Carolina, the program’s most in one game since 1998.
CUSA honors Liberty WR Smith
Liberty wide receiver Reese Smith was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. The Flames rallied from a 17-0 deficit to pull off a 35-24 win over East Carolina in a game that ended at about 2 a.m. Sunday.
He tied a school record with three touchdown receptions.
Oct. 5 game information set
Numerous start times and video information were released for Oct. 5. Virginia’s homecoming game against Boston College will be at noon. Virginia Tech at Stanford will be at 3:30 on ACC Network.
Old Dominion at Coastal Carolina will be at 7 p.m. on ESPN+, while James Madison at Louisiana Monroe will be on ESPNU at 7.
