The veteran reliever was designated for assignment Tuesday for the second time in five days, this one just a day after he was re-signed and pitched 1/3 of an inning in the Yankees’ loss to the Tigers on Monday.
The Yankees had to make room on the active roster to reinstate Ian Hamilton from the injured list before Tuesday’s game, so Ottavino was the odd man out.
The 39-year-old right-hander had signed with the Yankees last week to be on the active roster for three days while Devin Williams was on the paternity list, but then got DFA’d on Friday.
Given his current rate, and his on-retainer-like status with the Yankees, Ottavino may be back with them by the weekend.
