This Political Figure Cleared up Her Thoughts on Meghan Markle & It’s Raising Questions
If you’ve followed Meghan Markle‘s journey is the past few years, you know that criticisims and hate have clouded each of her accomplishments. After all, Markle’s haters, be it the British media or not, aren’t afraid to go after Markle as she forges a whole new life for herself in the U.S.
Most recently, Markle and her fans got to see how quickly misinformation spreads about her without us even knowing. Following her brief trip to Nigeria with Prince Harry last month, a speech from Nigeria’s First Lady Remi Tinubu raised some eyebrows.
In it (watch a short clip HERE!), Tinubu takes a firm stance against showing some skin. “We are not having the Met Gala… We don’t accept nakedness in our culture,” she said. “It is not beautiful at all… They are mimicking and trying to emulate film stars from America. They don’t know where they come from.”
Later on, Tinubu refers to Markle by name. “Why did Meghan come here looking for Africa?” she said. “That is something we have to take home with. We know who we are and don’t lose who you are.”
Here are all the ways Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has reminded us of the late Princess Diana. https://t.co/nBvRgB0jLi— SheKnows (@SheKnows) June 2, 2024
Shortly after her speech, viewers and the media were quick to connect the stance against nakedness and America actresses to Markle. After all, the Duchess wasn’t afraid to show her arms, back and shoulders in summer dresses during the trip. For many, this is what Tinubu was saying: Nigerian women should no show their skin like Markle.
But, after the internet got wind of this interpretation, Tinubu is setting the record straight.
“She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are and hence her coming here,” the First Lady’s office said in a statement to AFP Fact Check. “At no point did she say anything about Meghan’s dressing.”
So there it is, a seemingly entirely innacurate representation of opinions that, once again, had Markle on the receiving end. Knowing how much the trip meant for Markle given her Nigerian heritage, we hope she can still remember those days fondly.
