Question of the Week: All-Big 12 selections for Kansas State?
Kansas State is considered a Big 12 title contender. It remains to be seen if they will be anointed the preseason favorite when we gather for Big 12 Media Days in Las Vegas in July. It also remains to be seen who on the roster will be given preseason All-Big 12 recognition.
Remember, they only provide a first team in the preseason. Which Wildcats get the nod?
Offensively, it’s tough. While they do have high upside in the receiver room and at tight end, none of the K-State group likely is chosen. The same goes for Avery Johnson at quarterback, even if hopes are high that he’s the real deal from the jump.
And while I really like both Dylan Edwards and DJ Giddens, the Kansas State duo likely gets overlooked in favor of Ollie Gordon for Oklahoma State, Devin Neal of Kansas RJ Harvey for UCF and/or Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks.
If K-State wants to have any selections on offense, it likely has to come from the offensive line. The problem is that the three returning contributors – Hadley Panzer, Taylor Poitier and Carver Willis – are not likely to be among the top vote-getters.
Defensively is where some selections could reside but not likely on the defensive line. The ends, outside of Brendan Mott, are young and unproven. Uso Seumalo hasn’t done enough. There’s a chance for Kansas State linebacker Desmond Purnell to be chosen but I doubt it on Austin Moore.
Cornerbacks Keenan Garber and Jacob Parrish may get a look, but voters will likely opt to go in a different direction. And the lone safety that could garner first team recognition is returning starter Marques Sigle.
So, in a roundabout way, I think there’s a chance that the only K-State players considered and/or likely to get the first team discussion are Purnell and Sigle despite all of the talent on the roster that we think is worthy of a Big 12 title game appearance in Arlington.
If I’m wrong, it’s because voters decided to look past some of the inexperience in favor of those on the roster that just contain a ton of potential but are largely unproven.
