In a surprise announcement this Friday, former Food Network star Paula Deen revealed that she would be closing her Savannah restaurant. The Savannah eatery, The Lady & Sons, was operated by Paula and her two sons, Jamie and Bobby. Keep reading to find out more.
Paula Deen Suddenly Announces Closure of Savannah Eatery
On Friday, August 1st, Paula Deen announced the closure of her Savannah restaurant, The Lady & Sons. The establishment was open for nearly three decades. It was a family-owned restaurant that Paula operated with her two sons. In addition to Lady & Sons, The Chicken Box, which sold takeout lunches, is also permanently closed. Deen shared on social media and business websites a statement regarding their closings. She said:
“Hey, y’all, my sons and I made the heartfelt decision that Thursday, July 31st, was the last day of service for The Lady & Sons and The Chicken Box. Thank you for all the great memories and for your loyalty over the past 36 years. We have endless love and gratitude for every customer who has walked through our doors.”

Paula Deen revealed that her restaurants in Nashville and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Branson, Missouri will remain open. Fans of the celebrity chef will still be able to get divine cuisine at Deen’s other restaurants.
Customers Left Frustrated With Sudden Closures
Customers noted that the windows at Lady & Sons are already covered with brown paper. In addition, a sign at the front of the establishment read, “It is with heavy hearts and tremendous gratitude that we announce that we have retired and closed.” One customer who traveled to Savannah from Cincinnati to visit Deen’s restaurant said that the morning of the reservation, they received a text message that their reservation was canceled. The customer said:
“I thought this must be a mistake or maybe they planned to close and we don’t live here and just weren’t up to speed, but no. We wish them the best. Hopefully everything turns out.”
Another customer revealed the restaurant appeared to be doing well even until the time it closed. They said:
“Nobody knew anything was wrong, I walk by there two or three times a week at lunch, and it was always packed.”

Paula Deen has been facing public criticism since 2013, when she was fired from the Food Network. Deen was sued by a former employee, and it was revealed in court that she had used racist slurs. The celebrity chef has since participated in Dancing With the Stars, MasterChef: Legends, and At Home With Paula Deen. Paula has also turned to YouTube, and her cooking videos have gained her 520,000 subscribers.
