Michigan junior quarterback Alex Orji threw for only 32 yards in last weekend’s 27-24 win over USC, but Moore will stick with him as the team’s starter. Moore was pleased that Orji played turnover free football in the victory.
“Alex will be the starter again,” Moore stated. “There is definitely more to his game and more that we have complemented for him and for the offense. Thought he did a good job. He took care of the football for us, which is the No. 1 thing we wanted. He was a great team player, did all the things we asked him. He ran extremely hard when we asked him to. So, proud of him and proud of his performance.”
Moore was asked how he will allocate practice reps between Orji and the backups, knowing that the Michigan starter needs as many snaps as possible given that lack of experience is one of his shortcomings but also that others need to be ready if and when they are called upon.
“I don’t know what the magic number is, whether it’s 70/30, 60/40,” Moore said. “But you definitely have the plays that you know you want Alex to get — run, pass, there are things that you want him to get, you need him to get with certain receivers, certain people, certain tight ends, to get the timing. So he’ll get the majority of those, and then those guys will get them behind him.”
Moore was pleased with what he saw from the Michigan offensive line in Saturday’s win. The group helped pave the way for 290 rushing yards.
“That defense is pretty good, and 290 yards on the ground, I think we averaged like 6 yards per carry,” Moore said. “So the O-line definitely played their best game, for sure. I think they averaged like 3 yards a run before contact, which is pretty good.”
Michigan takes on Minnesota at noon ET this weekend.
