Hot hatchback that ‘handles beautifully’ & left Jeremy Clarkson ‘drooling’ can be yours for less than £8,000
A HOT hatchback that’s loved by Jeremy Clarkson can now be picked up second-hand at a bargain price.
The very fun Suzuki Swift Sport was reviewed by the Top Gear legend in 2014 for The Sunday Times, and he described it as “really rather marvellous.”

Top GearJeremy Clarkson raved about the little motor in a 2014 review[/caption]
The Swift first became a model of its own in 2004 after the name was briefly used for the Suzuki Cultus, and it’s since become one of the most popular superminis in the UK.
Naturally, a Sport version was produced soon after – ready to go up against various other hot hatches on the market.
However, it was distinctly different to other similar motors on the market at the time.
Jeremy wrote: “There’s a tendency today to make hot hatchbacks extremely fast and large and gaudy.
“But all of that rather misses the point.
“A hot hatchback should be a normal hatchback with just a little bit of spiciness sprinkled into the mix.
“That’s what you got with the originals: the Volkswagen Golfs and the Peugeot 205s and the Ford Escorts. And it’s what you get with the Swift Sport.”
He goes onto discuss the little car’s 1.6-litre engine which isn’t fitted with a turbo or supercharged with electricity, but instead given high- lift camshafts
He wrote: “I’m drooling – so that you end up with a revvy 134bhp.”
What’s more, the Swift is very light – weighing just 1,045kg – meaning you end up with 128bhp per ton, similar to the Peugeot 205 GTI, a car Clarkson describes as a “legend.”
He added: “It’s not fast, not if you compare it with a Golf R or a Mercedes A 45 AMG, but it is fun.
“It handles beautifully and has a puppy-dog enthusiasm when you’re in the mood.
“Critically, however, it becomes just a normal small hatch when you aren’t – so, as standard you get features such as climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and so on.”
There’s also enough room for a small family, which Clarkson lightly remarks: “It even comes with space in the back for children.
“I know this because I had to give Richard Hammond a lift and he didn’t moan once about being cramped.”
A Suzuki Swift Sport from 2014 can be picked up today for a reasonable price – with the cheapest options coming in at under £5,000.
However, for a good quality low-mileage version, you’re looking at around £8,000 – with £10,000 perhaps the most you’d find to pay.
It comes after Wheeler Dealer’s Mike Brewer provided an update on his stolen Ford Fiesta after it “vanished off the face of the earth“.
Elsewhere, an iconic 1980s sports car is rumoured for a revival, 16 years after it was discontinued.
