FSU’s Huge Recruiting Weekend: Three key storylines on offense
The FSU football staff is hosting a huge recruiting weekend with around 20 prospects on campus for official visits, and there are three key storylines to follow on offense and defense.
On offense, the Seminoles are trying to land multiple five-star linemen and elite playmakers at the skill positions, while also holding onto a pair of very important commitments. Here is a primer for what to look for on that side of the ball this weekend:
Big opportunity for FSU OL recruiting
This could be the most offensive line talent FSU has hosted ever in one official visit weekend. The Seminoles are hosting two uncommitted five-star OL targets in Josh Petty and Ty Haywood, and there’s also five-star FSU commit Solomon Thomas. The ‘Noles also are hosting four-stars Peyton Joseph and Lamont Rogers.
The main uncommitted targets to focus on are Petty and Joseph. FSU had been trending for both coming into this visit, and we hear the Seminoles could close on both this weekend if all goes well. The key to both of these visits revolves around the connection to FSU players on the visit and the overall comfort level on campus.
Another interesting one could be Haywood, who visited FSU early in the spring and had very high praise for what he saw from the ‘Noles after a spring practice. It won’t be an easy pull with Oklahoma being the big favorite at this point, but the Seminoles gave themselves a shot by getting Haywood to take the official. Rogers seems to be a similar situation.
Picking up momentum with top playmakers
FSU is hosting some elite offensive playmakers this weekend as well. We’ll start with four-star RB Byron Louis and four-star WR Daylan McCutcheon, both of whom I consider very high on the Seminoles. In fact, when it comes to Louis, I would say the ‘Noles still sit in the best spot in that recruitment.
I do get the sense that FSU feels pretty good about its position with McCutcheon, but that one likely comes down to Florida State and USC as the main two schools. McCutheon feels very strongly about the FSU staff, so that part of the equation is in a good spot, but this will be his first real chance to see how he connects with the Seminoles’ players.
When it comes to Louis, I believe he’s FSU’s top target at running back, and the ‘Noles have been in good shape here and seem to have the momentum. But Louis also seems like like Georgia, which he visited last weekend, as well as Miami.
Other playmakers to watch this weekend are three-star TE Hollis Davidson and another highly coveted receiver in four-star Vernell Brown. I feel FSU is in a pretty good spot for Davidson as long as the visit goes well, while things are a little more complicated with Brown. The Gators have the edge there from what I hear right now. FSU has done a great job in this recruitment and will get a chance to finish strong this weekend, but I think the ‘Noles will have to do something unique to make a big jump here.
FSU also is hosting CJ Wiley, another four-star receiver and one where FSU has worked its way into the top three. But Georgia is in a strong spot there. So the ‘Noles again will have to make a really strong move to be considered a major threat.
Shutting down two major offensive commits
Two of the most important targets of the weekend are actually players who are already committed to FSU — four-star QB commit Tramell Jones and five-star OL commit Solomon Thomas.
All things considered, Jones is likely the most important when you consider that a quarterback commit is usually the leader of a recruiting class. Jones is saying all the right things about the ‘Noles and being locked in, but it will be good to see if there is a definitive answer this weekend. The fact that Jones never took an official visit to Florida makes me lean toward believing he will shut things down and stick with the ‘Noles, but this visit should tell us for sure.
Then with Thomas, he was one that we knew would go through the recruiting process and take official visits. I feel less concerned about that recruitment because there have been no obvious warning signs of a flip at this stage. And the feeling from the FSU side has been that as long as he takes this official visit, it’s expected he will stick with the ‘Noles.
