Detroit Man Receives 10-Year Sentence for Assaulting Nurse at Federal Lockup in Milan
A Detroit man has been slapped with a 10-year prison sentence for the brutal attack on a nurse practitioner inside a federal lockup, law enforcement officials said. Tyjuan Gray, 24, committed the violent assault during a check-up at the Federal Correctional Institution, Milan, as FOX 2 reported.
Caught during a routine medical examination in July of last year, Gray, while being housed at the detention center, strangled and battered the medical professional after she was pinned against a wall, unable to summon help. With her ability to radio for assistance held in Gray's restraining grip, it was only by the timely interference of another inmate that the nurse was spared further harm.
Both the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan and the FBI took part in bringing Gray to justice. In a statement obtained by the Eastern District of Michigan, U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison highlighted that Gray's "unprovoked, egregious assault" took not just a physical toll on the victim, but also "left her with emotional scars that will last a lifetime."
"His actions not only caused her physical injury but took away her ability to feel safe at work," Ison added. Disrupting the medical care environment with violence, Gray's sentencing by United States District Judge Terrence G. Berg reflects the gravity of his actions, according to FBI Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson, who condemned the attack as "unjustifiable and completely unacceptable."
The case was investigated by the FBI with Assistant U.S. Attorney Tara Hindelang at the forefront of the prosecution. This 10-year sentence stands as a stark warning against acts of violence, particularly against those in the healthcare profession – a group already under immense strain and deserving of society's utmost respect and protection.
