Athens Man Indicted in the 2001 Murder of University of Georgia Law Student After 23-Year Investigation
After a relentless pursuit spanning over two decades, an Athens man has finally been collared for the grisly 2001 murder of University of Georgia law student Tara Louise Baker, say authorities.
Edrick Lamont Faust, 48, now faces a slew of charges including murder, two counts of felony murder, and one count of aggravated sodomy in the cold case that has haunted the college town for 23 years, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed. Faust was booked into the Athens-Clarke County Jail, according to a statement from the GBI.
In a blaze that was no accident, firefighters on January 19, 2001, discovered the remains of Baker, then a hardworking 23-year-old poised for a legal career. An in-depth review and analysis of Baker's case started in September of 2023, finally culminating in Faust's arrest, the law enforcement agencies confirmed.
"Tara's life was stolen from her in a horrific act of violence," GBI Director Chris Hosey remarked in the statement. "While this arrest does not bring her back to us, I pray that it helps bring closure to the Baker family as they continue their healing journey." The case that remained lodged in the local conscience now sees a pivot toward justice as agencies including the FBI, GBI's Division of Forensic Sciences and the Georgia State Patrol assisted in breaking the case wide open.
A news conference is expected to unspool further developments. Meanwhile, the feds continue to beseech anyone with information pivotal to the investigation to come forward. Tips can be lodged anonymously with GBI by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online, or via the See Something, Send Something mobile app, the agency stipulated.
