On300 QB commit Carter Smith ready to help Michigan recruit during official visit
Michigan quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell and offensive line coach Grant Newsome ended the spring evaluation period by making their way to Florida to see the future of the program.
On300 Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot quarterback Carter Smith committed to U-M back in the fall thanks in large part to the bonds he built with the staff. And they are a big reason he’s remained completely solid throughout the process.
“It’s definitely exciting because those are the people that I’m going to be around for the next four years,” Smith said. “It’s cool that they took the time out to come see me, especially this far, is great. It’s always good to see them. It feels like we’re family now.”
Campbell no longer has to recruit Smith. Instead, the pair have personal conversations and discuss Smith’s diligent offseason work that’s involved going to multiple private quarterback trainers in order to improve as a pure passer.
“It’s been great,” Smith said. “We can have normal conversations. We can have hard conversations about what I need to work on. We’ve talked about my hips and getting them more engaged in my throwing motion. Being able to be able to talk to him about that is a good sign for where our relationship is at right now.”
Smith visited Michigan for the annual spring game and will be back in Ann Arbor for his official visit next weekend.
“I’ve seen everything I need to see,” Smith said. “For me, it’s mainly about getting around some of the other recruits. I’m going to be selling The Big House and what we have to offer. There are some great names on the list, so I’m excited to get out there.”
As Smith mentioned, he will have his recruiting hat on throughout Victors Weekend. He also been in communication with a few of Michigan’s top wide receiver options.
“I’ve been talking to (three-star wide receiver) Phillip Wright a little bit,” Smith said. “I got to spend time with him at the spring game. I’ve been talking some to (Top 100 wide receiver) Derek Meadows. I’m going to be around (Top 100 tight end) Andrew Olesh a lot on the visit. I’m excited to recruit some of the other guys there. Michigan just has a different atmosphere. You can tell it’s more of a family. I’m really going to talk about that aspect of it.”
At 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, Smith is ranked as the No. 16 quarterback and No. 211 overall recruit nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking.
