Emergency services from Rhodes have travelled to the island to join the search
A senior Greek official said “no stone” would be left unturned to find the Dr Mosley adding that a chopper, specially trained dogs and drones would be brought to join the rescue team’s efforts.
They told The Sun: “Since this morning we have had all available forces out there on the island and we have asked to bring in specially trained dogs and even a helicopter from Athens for back up too.
“No stone will be left unturned. Symi is a small island, he can’t just have disappeared.”
The health expert was said to be walking to Pedi from the beach -where he forgot his phone- when he went missing on Wednesday.
His concerned wife Dr Clare Bailey, 62, raised the alarm by 7.30 and local authorities started scouring the area.
But speaking to Greek media the island’s mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas said some witnesses claimed they spotted Dr Mosley in town after his walk, speaking to another person.
He told Live News: “The whole island is in turmoil. The volunteers of the island and the services are out looking to find him.
“The information we have says that he returned from the beach of Agios Nikolaos, walked the footpath which is 10-15 minutes and arrived at Pedi, which is a residential area.”
The mayor explained that witnesses claimed Dr Mosley was seen talking to a woman after leaving the beach while other witnesses said he was spotted speaking to a man in Pedi.
“It is not easy for a person to go missing in Symi, I think if something had happened, since last night when they were searching and scouring Pedi, we would have found some trace.”
Speaking to Proto Thema the mayor added: “All of these are testimonies that are being investigated at the moment.
“The mobilisation of the police and the fire brigade is great and we hope that the man is found quickly and that he is in good health.”
Police fear the 67-year-old may have “fallen from a height” and said they are looking into all possibilities.
A policeman said the search so far has focused on the area between the beach of Agios Nikolaos, where Mosley was last seen, and the resort of Pedi where he was staying with his wife.
A community Facebook group on Symi shared a photo of Dr Mosley wearing a blue polo shirt a cap and sunglasses, appealing for information.
The post reads: “Have you seen this man? He set off to walk back from St Nick’s at about 13.30 and failed to make it home.
“His friends are concerned as it is 6 hours since they last saw him.
“His name is Dr Mike Mosley and he is a familiar face for many British people as he has appeared on the BBC.
“The police and coast guard have been informed EMAK, the island’s rescue team, is also involved.”
