Orthodox Priest Killed In Russia Church Attack Identified As Nikolay Kotelnikov
The Orthodox priest killed by unknown assailants at a church in Russia's southern region of Dagestan has been identified as Father Nikolay Kotelnikov. The assailants reportedly broke into the Derbent Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Sunday, shortly after the evening service, and killed the 66-year-old Archpriest by slitting his throat. The news of his passing was confirmed by Shamil Khadulaev, head of the regional Public Oversight Committee, on his Telegram channel. A security guard, identified as Mikhail, who worked at the church, was shot by the assailants. He was only armed with a gas pistol. According to local reports, at least 10 people, including eight police officers, were killed in the attacks. At least 34 others were injured, with 27 of them being law enforcement officers. The regional interior ministry said that a total of four militants were "eliminated" by security forces in Makhachkala. Several unconfirmed reports claimed that two sons of a local official in Dagestan were involved in the attacks.
