Florida State baseball earns Top 8 national seed; Will open with Stetson on Friday
It came down to the final spot, but the Florida State baseball team was indeed awarded with a Top 8 national seed by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee on Monday afternoon.
The Seminoles (42-15) are the No. 8 overall seed heading into the national tournament, and if they are to win the Tallahassee Regional this weekend, they’ll host a Super Regional the following week. They are matched up with the No. 9 seed Oklahoma Sooners’ regional, which also includes ACC Tournament Champion Duke in Norman.

As for who the Seminoles will be facing this weekend, they’ll open with Stetson (40-20), which split the two games it played with FSU this season. Florida State beat the Hatters 1-0 back in March and then lost to the Hatters 10-5 earlier this month.
The other two teams coming to Tallahassee for the regional are UCF (35-19) and Alabama (33-22). Florida State and Stetson will play the first game at noon on Friday. The Knights and Crimson Tide will play the nightcap at 6 p.m. ET.
No matter how this weekend or the next turns out, what a remarkable turnaround the Florida State baseball team pulled off in 2024. Going from the worst season in school history to a Top 8 national seed is quite an accomplishment.
“I’m proud for the guys in that room,” Jarrett said. “Being recognized as a top eight seed. The schedule from start to finish. The difficulty in the middle of the week. The challenge within the league. The challenge in the conference tournament. They earned that. And it’s not easy to be in this position.
“I’m proud of what those kids have done.”
Junior Jaime Ferrer was a part of the 2023 squad, which was the first FSU team since 1977 to not make the NCAA Tournament. And in his freshman year, the Seminoles were one of the last teams in the field and forced to go on the road for the NCAA Regionals.
Now, Ferrer is part of one of the eight best teams in America and will be playing his first career NCAA Tournament games at Dick Howser Stadium.
So, he appreciates this year’s turnaround about as much as anybody.
“I mean, it’s everything for us,” Ferrer said. “It’s something we talked about a lot in the summer. We want to come back and we want to host a Regional. We want to have the opportunity to host a Super Regional. Not only for ourselves but for our fans.
“… We kind of owed it to the fans and the staff and everyone that’s put something into this program to go out and be the best version of ourselves and put out a good product for them.”
They did just that.
Of course, the national seed is a reward for a great regular season.
The postseason is a whole different animal, as Ferrer and Jarrett and everyone associated with Florida State baseball knows.
The ultimate goal is Omaha.
The Seminoles officially begin their journey Friday at noon.
At home.
“We approach every one of our games in essence to get to this moment,” Jarrett said. “If you don’t take care of business on the front end, on your weekends, in the middle of the week, those midweek games are tough, tough, tough here.
“So, this is a reward. And if you do your job and continue to play well, like you look to be at home two weekends in a row. Which it’s easier to win in your home park. Any coach will tell you that. You’re familiar with it. You have the fans here on your side. And our fans impact what goes on and we will need them to be impactful this weekend as they have all year.”
