Santa Clara Man Charged in 37-Year-Old San Jose Murder, DNA Evidence Revives Cold Case
A Santa Clara man has been charged in connection with a 37-year-old murder, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office announced. Joseph Anthony Abeyta, the accused, faces allegations of having murdered Jesus Ibarra in 1987, with Ibarra's body being discovered by family members in his own San Jose apartment.
Abeyta, scheduled for arraignment today, could serve 25 years to life if convicted for the slaying, which involved strangulation by the power cord. In this event, it's believed Abeyta knew the victim personally and may have stolen a gold chain necklace, a ring, and his car, which was later found torched near Abeyta's residence, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.
District Attorney Jeff Rosen emphasized the tenacity of law enforcement in these cases, as detailed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, "There is no statute of limitations on finding, arresting, and prosecuting people who hurt and kill the people of our community. Violent criminals should look over their shoulders because we’re coming," a direct quote from the DA's release. An in-depth investigation rekindled the dormant case when DNA evidence newly tested this year was matched to Abeyta, placing him at the scene of Ibarra's murder and within the vicinity of the torched vehicle's recovery site on Peach Court.
