4-star WR Donovan Olugbode impressed by DJ Lagway, Gators’ WR development
Donovan Olugbode’s recruitment is coming into focus, but the 4-star receiver from Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy still has two remaining official visits. One will be to Florida on June 14. The other to Missouri on June 21. Last week, he checked out Southern California.
When might he have a commitment decision?
“Whenever it feels right,” Olugbode told Gators Online. “I want to stick to before the season, but if something comes up and I have to make more decisions, I’ll move it to whenever.”
Olugbode appears to be a big Gators target. He’s the No. 14 receiver and No. 116 overall recruit nationally for the On3 Industry Rankings.
He already has taken multiple trips to Gainesville. Thus far, he has heard good things about Florida’s freshman quarterback DJ Lagway. Lagway, of course, is primed to become the Gators’ starting quarterback in what would be Olugbode’s freshman season of college.
Donovan Olugbode thinks highly of Gators QB DJ Lagway
“Lagway is my guy,” Olugbode said. “I talk to him when I’m up there. Good quarterback. Good guy. Me and (Gators coach Billy Napier) talk about him, about what he’s gonna do in the offense and how he’s gonna be able to contribute.”
Olugbode watched the Gators practice this spring and was impressed by Lagway’s potential.
“Definitely a good player,” Olugbode said. “Knows a lot about the game. Learned the offense quick. That’s something (Napier) said when I first got there. He’s already running with the twos.”
With Florida, Olugbode said he has built a solid relationship with receivers coach Billy Gonzales and receivers assistant David Doecker. And he respects them as developers of talent.
“Just knowing what they did with Ricky (Pearsall) and the guys they have now and have had in the past,” Olugbode said. “Them developing and what they know about the game is big.”
Olugbode said he also likes that Napier is heavily involved in the Florida offense and has aa background as a receivers coach. When he visits the Gators for his official, he hopes to meet more with Napier and “see how he plans to use me.”
While much of the chatter is about USC and Washington with Olugbode, Missouri can’t be counted out. The Tigers have a 5-star quarterback committed in Matt Zollers and that has Olugbode’s attention.
“That’s definitely huge,” Olugbode said. “Matt is a good player. Probably one of the best QBs in the country.”
For Olugbode, his recruitment will come down to several factors. But these are the ones he pinpointed: “Definitely development, getting in there and learning the plays and playing early, and just having an offensive head coach.”
