On May 26, Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the Sunshine State, per USA Today.
The filing reveals how the chain restaurant has struggled in many ways, such as its 30% decrease in guests since 2019.
In a 124-page document, CEO Jonathan Tibus shared why Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy and why he supported the decision.
“Recently, the debtors have faced a number of financial and operational challenges, including a difficult macroeconomic environment, a bloated and underperforming restaurant footprint, failed or ill-advised strategic initiatives, and increased competition within the restaurant industry,” said Tibus.
As of May 22, Red Lobster’s website listed 99 locations closed across 28 states.
Some of the locations are auctioning off their kitchen equipment via an online restaurant liquidator.
The liquidator, TAGeX Brands, announced last week it was hosting auctions for supplies from 48 Red Lobster locations that have closed.
Each winner would receive the “entire contents of the Red Lobster location they bid on,” according to the liquidator’s website.
