Astro Bot becomes the fastest-selling plaformer of the past decade (aside from Mario)
Astro Bot marks the latest and greatest first-party exclusive from Sony, with the PS5 title launching earlier this month to universal acclaim from both critics and players alike. Despite being a relatively new IP, Astro Bot’s first proper game is already outpacing many of its contemporaries – becoming the fastest-selling plaformer of the past decade (aside from Mario).
Last week, we reported on Astro Bot’s launch sales in the UK, revealing that the 3D platformer had performed 21% better than the latest Ratchet and Clank title – a decent start for the relatively new IP.
Now however, we have gotten more concrete details, revealing an even more impressive feat – with Christopher Dring of Gamesindustry.biz saying ”Astro Bot's week 1 in the UK is bigger than Sonic Frontiers' and Crash 4's debut, and they're multiplatform.”
Adding further proof of its success, Dring continued, “Astro is the fastest selling original platform game outside of Mario from the last 10 years. Bigger than Sonic, Crash, Yoshi, Kirby…”
As with Mario games, hopefully Astro Bot will have a long shelf life, with new and old PS5 owners alike picking up the game over the coming years.
Regardless, Astro Bot’s early success seems to prove that there is space and demand in the 3D platformer genre – it just needed a genuinely great non-Mario game to prove this.
