'People Didn't Think We Will Be Here': Aaron Jones Reflects On USA's Debut T20 World Cup After End Of Campaign
USA vice-captain Aaron Jones reflected on his team's dream debut at the T20 World Cup during the 2024 edition after their campaign came to an end following a crushing 10-wicket loss against England in a Super 8 game in Barbados on Sunday. Riding on Chris Jordan's sensational hat-trick and captain Jos Buttler's blitzkrieg, England stormed into the semifinals of the T20 World Cup. Jordan's superb (4/10) helped England bowl out USA for 115 in 18.5 overs. Buttler then blazed away to a 38-ball 83 not out as England completed the chase in 9.4 overs to become the first team to make the semifinals of the mega event. This was USA' third consecutive defeat in the Super 8 stage of the tournament after losing to South Africa and West Indies in their previous game and they were knocked out of the tournament. Notably, the USA qualified for the T20 World Cup 2024 being the co-hosts of the event alongside the West Indies. They had a dream run in the group stage of the tournament, where the team defeated Canada and Pakistan to qualify for the next round. After losing to England, USA vice-captain Aaron Jones reflected on his team’s campaign. "It's very good for us, this is our first World Cup, lot of people did not think we would be here playing against England, West Indies and the big boys. Hopefully this will open the eyes of the American public," said Jones. "We've got a lot of calls and messages of support during this World Cup. I see us getting bigger and better from here," he added Jones expressed disappointment about not playing well in the last two matches. "Hard game to get to grips to be honest. We did not have a good last two games, something for us to talk about when we go back to the USA but that's how it goes. Looking forward to playing more big teams," he said. The attacking batter also mentioned that the shot selection was not good for his teammates and added that England skipper Jos Buttler batted beautifully "Wicket was a bit sticky, Rashid is a very experienced, very good bowler. Our shot selection was not good, we knew he was the dangerman. Something to look into and we definitely will come back harder. [on Buttler] Very experienced and he batted beautifully today," said Jones.Notably, USA have already qualified for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be played in India and Sri Lanka as they have finished among the top seven teams in 2024 other than the hosts.
